Assessing DFID’s results in improving Maternal Health – new review
30 Oct 2018
ICAI has today published a review of DFID’s results in improving Maternal Health which found that UK aid has expanded access to maternal health and family planning services, but is yet to make a significant difference to the quality and sustainability of these services.
The review praised DFID for championing family planning and reproductive rights at the international level and for developing a well-formulated strategy for achieving its maternal health objectives.
However, the review also highlighted a series of shortcomings, including severe shortages in beds, trained personnel, equipment and supplies, which mean that women remain at risk of dying from basic obstetric complications.
