We have published an information note providing an account of the UK’s humanitarian response to the Afghanistan crisis, focusing primarily on developments over 2023-24, including evidence collected in Kabul.

Summary

In 2022, ICAI published a country portfolio review assessing all UK aid to Afghanistan from 2014-2021. In light of the fast-changing and deteriorating situation in the country at the time, the report also provided a brief, non-evaluative account of UK humanitarian aid following the Taliban takeover in August 2021. This is the second of two information notes providing updates to that work, including how the funding situation and humanitarian needs have evolved. Last year’s information note covering 2021-2023 can be read on our website. This latest information note involved an ICAI visit to Kabul and Doha.
